DOG SAFETY RULES FOR CHILDREN

1. Always ask permission to pet a dog. Do not ever pet a stray dog.
2. Never stare at a dog. In dog language this is a challenge.
3. Approach a dog to pet it with your hand out and you palm facing up, so that the dog can feel comfortable sniffing you. Then scratch the dog under the chin instead of patting it on the head.
4. Never touch a dog while it is eating.
5. Never touch a dog while it is sleeping.
6. Never touch a dog while it is chewing or playing with a toy.
7. Never run by a dog, always walk slowly.
8. When passing by a dog on your bicycle or anything with wheels, give it plenty of room as you go by, never race by,
9. Never tease a dog, especially one that is behind a fence, on a leash or tie out or in a window.
10. Always listen to the dogs owner.
11. Never pet or hug a dog without the owners permission first.
12. Never try to take something a way from a dog, always as k an adult.
13. Never hit a dog or poke it with anything.
14. If a dog comes up to you, stand still and look at the ground, not at the dog.
15. Never try to help a hurt dog, go tell an adult. Hurt dogs are scared and do not always know that you are trying to help. They may bite from fear or pain.
16. Never pet a momma dog or her puppies without permission from the owner.

If A DOG ATTACKS

1. Do not run!
2. If you fall, ball yourself up and cover your head and neck.
3. Give the dog something other than yourself to bite. Your backpack, books, jacket, bike, lunch, etc.
4. Do not scream, this usually only excites the dog further.
