It is a tragedy when
helpless people, children and animals are abandoned any time of the
year. Great Danes sometimes have a particularly hard 'row to hoe' in
this because they are such cute little puppies that grow up to be so
big, or because these huge dogs are purchased to be watch dogs and they
do not please their masters in this. They are often abandoned, and
abused in the worst possible ways. That's where we come in, rescuing
them and saving their lives. We cannot do everything to solve the
problems of the lost in this world, but our little organization has a
mission here in North Texas to do something about abandoned and abused
Great Danes. Don't forget us this new year!

NOTICE:
Rabies vaccination Law:
See the Article in January, 2002,
Quoting our President, Midge Kelly.
The
Texas Department of Health is asking for interested parties to review
a document entitled "Options for Rabies Vaccination of Dogs and Cats
in Texas".
Interested persons
are asked to consider whether or not you think animal rabies
vaccinations Rules should be changed in Texas, and to let your opinion
be known to the Texas Department of Health. Comments will be accepted
until June 1, 2002.
TDH has researched
many issues associated with animals rabies vaccination schedules, in
Texas and nationwide, and prepared the "white paper" referenced below.
The paper summarizes the debate surrounding animal rabies vaccine
schedules and vaccine effectiveness, among other things. The
references used to prepare the paper are listed at the end of that
document, and I encourage you to read those articles for more detailed
information.
This paper is available on the
TDH website at:
http://www.tdh.state.tx.us/zoonosis/veterin/WHTPAPER.PDF
You may make your
opinion known by:
1) attending one of the public
meetings that will be held around the state this spring and voicing
your opinion, and/ or
2) emailing the state at: rabies.
control@tdh.state.tx.us
3) submitting written comments to
the Zoonosis Control Division:
Jane Mahlow, DVM, MS
Texas Department of Health
Zoonosis Control Division
1100 W. 49th St.
Austin, TX 78756
Before any changes to the animal rabies vaccination rules in Texas are
even proposed to the Texas Board of Health, the Zoonosis Control
Division must ask for feedback from stakeholders on this issue. A
stakeholder is anyone with an opinion on the animal rabies vaccination
rules in Texas! After comments are received and evaluated, TDH will
determine if a rule change needs to be made. If a change is warranted,
they will draft the proposed change and again make it available to the
public for comment. These comments will be evaluated before any final
decision is made on a rule change.
This is a lengthy
process, but one that allows ample time for persons' opinions to be
recognized.
The options for
debate are:
A. No change - leave
the animal rabies vaccination Rules in Texas as they are currently
written
B. Change (in Chap.
169 Rabies Control and Eradication Rules only; the options listed
below would not require a change in the Statutory Law of Chapter 826
Texas Health and Safety Code) -
1. annual
vaccination using any approved vaccine
2. annual
vaccination using a vaccine approved for three years (triennial
vaccine)
3. vaccination every
two years with a triennial vaccine
4. vaccination every
three years with a triennial vaccine
5. vaccination
according to manufacturer's recommendations
6. initial
vaccination with titer check
